It’s almost Valentine’s Day and so all the heart quilts come out to play. Well, I’m no different this year and sharing a block I created last year but am just now getting around to writing directions for 😅. To each thing in its own time. Lol!
This block is fast and easy and will use up your 5” charm squares, you just need (or not) two matching ones for one heart.
Check it out and let me know what you think and definitely share what you create with it! 😃
Fabric Requirements for 1 - 7” unfinished Quick Heart Block
2 – 5” - matching squares for the hearts
4 – 1½” - background squares
1 – 2 ½” - background square
Thread to match background
Additional Tools
¼” sewing or walking foot
Pins
Erasable fabric marker
Scissors
Sewing needle, size 80/12 – universal or microtex
Iron & Ironing board/mat
Instructions
- Cut one 5” square in half – from side to side, creating 2 – 2 ½”x 5” rectangles.
- Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on all four 1½” squares.
- Place one 1½” square on one rectangle at the top left corner of both rectangles.
- Sew a seam on the diagonal line.
Pro Tip: When you sew a teensy-bit over the line toward your cutting side you will have a more accurately finished unit (see picture below). This “scant” sewing line will help account for the fabric being folded over onto itself.
- Cut ¼" on the outside of the seam after sewing and press toward the darker fabric. This creates a snowball-ed corner.
- Repeat steps 3-5 on top right corner of same rectangles.
- Press open.
- With ¼” seam, sew one rectangle to the 5” square, with snowballed corners away from the 5” square—starting the heart.
- Press the seam toward the rectangle.
- Using a ¼” seam sew the 2½” background square to the left short-side of the other snowballed rectangle—making a skinny rectangle.
- Press the seam toward the rectangle.
- Sew the skinny rectangle to the started heart using a ¼” seam, being sure to nest the seams.
- Press the seam toward the skinny rectangle.
Voilà!
